As someone who’s yet to travel across the pond to play golf in its truest form, I get a little jealous when this two-week stretch comes along.
Media members who are lucky enough to cover The Open in person often travel with their sticks, taking advantage of the opportunity to play some of the purest golf courses in the world.
You just can’t beat links golf.
And on Wednesday, Scottie Scheffler, during his pre-tournament press conference ahead of this week’s Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club, perfectly depicted the beauty of the game in this part of the world.
Scottish Open: Picks to Win, Odds | How to Watch, Tee Times
“Coming over here, you get to do a lot of stuff I wouldn't normally do,” Scheffler said. “Around the greens here, for example, when we're in the States, if we're practicing short game around the green, playing a practice round, I probably will use two clubs. I'll use a 60-degree and a 56. Here, I'm bringing like five or six clubs, sometimes all the way down to an 8-iron.
“To me, it's a much more traditional style of golf where you can tell that the game is invented over here. Because if you come out with an older gentleman who is maybe a 10 handicap and can't hit the ball very high, I can still play these golf courses because you can run the ball on the ground.
“No matter where you are, there's always a shot to be played.”
The world’s best player has yet to win on this side of the Atlantic, but that’s not to say he hasn’t played well. In two previous starts at The Renaissance, Scheffler missed the cut in 2022 and tied for third in 2023. As for his record at The Open, he’s finished inside the top-25 in all four of his appearances, including a career-best T-7 finish at Royal Troon a year ago.
Given his creativity and willingness to play the required shot, it’s only a matter of time before he hoists a trophy on the links—hell, it’ll probably be five days from now.
