After losing its backing from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and with its future existence in limbo, LIV Golf has officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. According to the petition, Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau are listed as the top unsecured creditors.
Rumors of LIV’s bankruptcy began last week, with the Financial Times reporting that player settlements would be worth pennies on the dollar and that BC Partners, the reported lead investor of LIV’s new backing announced by CEO Scott O’Neil, hasn’t been willing to commit to the cash lifeline with LIV struggling to get commitments from enough players. Tuesday afternoon, LIV released a letter from O'Neil and linked to a longer proclimation on its future featuring an FAQs page with answers to common queries like Will there be a 2027 season? and I purchased a ticket for a 2027 event. Can I request a refund?
On top of the Chapter 11, LIV has dealt with lawsuits regarding unpaid invoices for services rendered and continued rumors that top players such as Jon Rahm could leave before LIV 2.0 has the chance to get off the ground.
It’s tough to know what comes next for LIV, but at the very least, it’ll be...entertaining to watch how it all unfolds. As for Rahm and DeChambeau, what comes next for them is the larger question remaining.
