Tom Kim Closes In on Asian Games Gold and a Crucial Military Exemption
Staring down required military service, Tom Kim is two shots back at the Asian Games and is in the hunt for the gold medal.
Two rounds separate Tom Kim from potential military service, but so far at the Asian Games, the fan-favorite has done a nice job of positioning himself near the top of the leaderboard with 36 holes to go.
Immediately after Team USA’s win at the Presidents Cup last weekend, Kim flew to Japan to represent South Korea at Kasugai Country Club. If he’s able to earn a gold medal individually or for his home country, Kim would be able to skip out on South Korea’s mandate that says all able-bodied males must serve between 18-21 months in the military once they turn 19.
After a second-round 4-under 66 on Thursday, Kim is two shots back of the lead held by Wei-hsuan Wang and Wenyi Ding at 9 under.
Kim, 24, regained lost form in 2026, even winning his fourth PGA Tour title at the Genesis Scottish Open in July. The World No. 32 will be playing for a whole lot more than just another win this weekend.
