Inside Nike's Next Generation of Golf

College golf may house some of the best amateur players in the world, but it is also becoming one of the clearest windows into golf's future.

I spent a few days with the Nike Golf team at Omni La Costa during the Men's and Women's NCAA Golf Championships and left thinking about something much bigger.

We're entering a really interesting era of golf.

The championships themselves might be one of the most competitive weeks in the sport. The number of elite athletes, the volume of golf being played, and the pressure packed into a condensed stretch creates an environment that rivals almost anything in amateur golf. College golf houses some of the best players in the world.

But what interested me most wasn't the competition.

It was the athletes.

I had the opportunity to spend time with a few of Nike's NIL athletes, including Tommy Morrison from Texas, Kihei Akina from BYU, and Oklahoma State teammates Preston Stout and Ethan Fang. Sitting down with them reinforced a thought I've had for some time: the next generation of golfers is arriving with a completely different set of influences, motivations, and pressures than the generations before them.

The game has changed. The culture surrounding it has changed. The path to becoming a professional golfer has changed.

College golf is a fascinating place to observe those shifts because it sits right in the middle of it all. These athletes have access to coaches, trainers, teammates, sports psychologists, facilities, and resources that previous generations could only dream about. At the same time, they're preparing for a future that eventually becomes much more individual. The support system gets smaller. The road gets quieter.

That transition from collegiate athlete to aspiring professional, feels like one of the most under-told stories in sports.

What struck me most was that beyond the rankings and accolades, they're still just young athletes chasing something bigger than themselves. Spending time around them reminded me why I love college sports so much. Some of the best years of my life were spent in similar environments. When you're around these athletes away from competition, you can still feel it: the friendships, the optimism, the belief, and the shared pursuit of a dream.

The future of golf isn't coming.

It's already here.

And it looks a little different than many people expected.
