Trunk Slammin: A Ton of Big Names Missed the Cut at the U.S. Open

Bryson DeChambeau, Ludvig Aberg, and Justin Thomas are just a few of the big names headed home.

Well, this isn’t exactly the leaderboard we were all expecting heading into the weekend at the U.S. Open. Scottie grinding to stay in the mix, Rory just sneaking into the weekend, and no Bryson. Kinda feels weird, to be honest.

Instead, it’s Sam Burns leading the pack at 3-under, while J.J. Spaun is 2-under, and Viktor Hovland is 1-under. Those three also happen to be the only players in red figures. Oakmont is delivering the carnage we were promised.

With that being said, there are a ton of PGA TOUR and LIV Golf stars headed home after just 36 holes, including the defending champ.

Big Names Who Missed the Cut at the U.S. Open

Ludvig Aberg (72-76, 8-over)

I really liked the Swede’s chances this week. I thought Oakmont would suit his game quite nicely. But alas, I was dead wrong.

Patrick Cantlay (76-72, 8-over)

Cantlay is playing well outside of the major championships, but he’s now tied for 36th at the Masters, and missed the cut at both the PGA Championship and U.S. Open. He’s yet to win one of these things.

Wyndham Clark (74-74, 8-over)

Outside of his win at LACC a few years ago, Clark has now missed three cuts in five U.S. Open appearances.

Phil Mickelson (74-74, 8-over)

Lefty has now missed the cut at all three majors in 2025.

Tommy Fleetwood (74-75, 9-over)

The Englishman came into the week in great form with five top-25 finishes in his last six starts, but he just didn’t have it in Pittsburgh.

Min Woo Lee (77-72, 9-over)

Since winning in Houston, Lee hasn’t finished better than 49th in six starts and has now missed the cut at both the PGA Championship and U.S. Open.

Bryson DeChambeau (73-77, 10-over)

This golf course seemed like it was built for Bryson and he’s been in the mix of seemingly every major in the last couple years, but the defending champ is headed home.

Dustin Johnson (75-75, 10-over)

DJ won the U.S. Open the last time it was held at Oakmont (2016), but the course wasn’t as kind to him this time around.

Joaquin Niemann (75-75, 10-over)

Niemann is cleaning up on the LIV Golf Tour, but his struggles in major championships continued in Pittsburgh.

Sepp Straka (78-73, 11-over)

Straka has two wins on the PGA TOUR this season, but he’s missed the cut at all three major championships. That’s uh…not great.

Justin Thomas (76-76, 12-over)

On Wednesday I went against my gut and thought JT had a chance to win. I’ll never do that again.

Shane Lowry (79-78, 17-over)

Yikes. I think that’s all I have to say. (TBH, I thought he was going to play well.)
