The Overwhelming Emotion of Making the Cut at the U.S. Open—This Is What It’s All About

If you're going to watch one video from Oakmont today, let it be this one. Sometimes, it just means more.

Philip Barbaree, Jr. is making his second appearance at the U.S. Open this week at Oakmont Country Club. The first time around (2018), things did not go his way. He shot rounds of 82-79 to miss the cut at Shinnecock.

But he’s written a new story in Pittsburgh.

Thanks to his late tee time Friday afternoon and the weather that rolled through the area, Barbaree had to come back to the course Saturday morning to push for the weekend.

He made a par on the 17th Saturday morning and needed to make another on the 18th to make it to the weekend.

After hitting the fairway, his approach came up short and right of the flag, but he left himself a 32-foot putt for birdie. He left that effort five feet short and now had a knee-buckler to earn weekend tee times.

And he did it.

This is what it’s all about. So, so good.

Now, what does this mean for Barbaree? Well, as Ryan French laid out on Twitter, this made cut lets him skip the first stage of Q School. He could still earn enough points on the Americas Tour to earn a spot on the Korn Ferry Tour, but this is a huge step for him.

Congrats to him, his family, and everyone else who made this possible. One of the many reasons we love the United States Open.
