This past week, men’s professional golf took over Pittsburgh for the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont, and after four tough rounds, a rain delay, and a lot of rough, J.J. Spaun came away with victory, sealed by a 64-foot putt on the final hole. And, with Spaun's victory being the biggest story in golf, there is no better way to spend this week’s Trend Tracker than diving into his gear.

As the new U.S. Open champion, Spaun has a pretty interesting setup when it comes to his clubs. Although he is a Srixon staff player, he (like many modern tour players) has the ability to mix and match in some clubs from other brands to complete his set. The most notable, and something I’m sure will get talked about a lot over the next couple of weeks, is his LAB Golf DF3 putter.
With the help of his putt on the final hole, Spaun ranked 2nd in strokes gained putting for the week at +2.29.
I almost sound like a broken record talking about Srixon irons, but hey, when you’re hot you’re hot, and of the 27 PGA TOUR events (including majors) so far in 2025, Srixon irons have been used to win 7 of those events, including 4 of the last 7 with the help of Ryan Fox, and Sepp Straka.
One thing Spaun has in common with both of those players is his use of a combo set to help create ideal distance gapping. He splits his set at the 5-iron and moves to Srixon’s faster and more forgiving ZXi5 for the 4-iron. The 4-iron came in very handy on the back 9 when he hit his approach shot on the 244-yard par 3 16th hole to a comfy 2-putt distance!
As for his wedges, he uses a mixed bag of Cleveland models with lofts of 50, 54, and 60. They also came in handy, considering he ranked 20th in the entire field for strokes gained short game.
He even hit the flag stick on his approach to the 2nd green during the final round, resulting in the ball rolling back off the front of the green.

BUY NOWAs for the rest of Spaun's clubs, the top end of his bag has some new and old, including the popular Titleist GT3, plus some TaylorMade Qi10 3 and 5-woods. The driver came in particularly helpful on the second-to-last hole when he drove the green on the uphill par-4 to set up an eagle opportunity, leading to a tap-in birdie to take a 1-shot lead into the final hole.
Last but certainly not least was Spaun's use of the Srixon Z-Star Diamond golf ball, a ball that was initially introduced after Brooks Koepka signed with the brand in 2021. Before that, they only had two premium ball options: the Z-Star and Z-Star XV, but the Diamond offers a third choice with more iron and approach spin than the others for added control, something that came in very convenient around Oakmont.
It was an exciting and chaotic US Open and congrats to J.J. Spaun on the win—now off to the Travelers.
