The New Driver and Putter That Lead to J.T. Poston's Big Memorial Win

The old adage in the golf equipment business was "what wins on Sunday sells on Monday", but this week at the Memorial, things worked a little differently for J.T. Poston; because he put a putter into play that just went on sale this week and went on to win.

The putter in question is (sorry if this sounds familiar) a TaylorMade Spider Tour X with a plumber's neck hosel—the same model used by Scottie Scheffler and several other tour players.

How much did the putter help this week around Muirfield Village?

J.T. came into the week averaging +0.018 strokes gained putting so far this year on TOUR, but after rounds of 70, 65, 69, and 72 he came away with a weekly average of +1.716 stroked gained per round—a more than +1.5 improvement on his year average.

More Than Just The Putter

The other club new to Poston's bag is his GTS3 driver which just went into play around the PGA Championship.

Although it wasn't his strongest club in the bag this week based on strokes gained data, it did leave his with enough playable approach shots because he averages +2.020 stroked gained on approach which is close to 2 full shots better than his Tour average this year. And, it was done on a very difficult golf course.

It really does demonstrate that it still can be about driving for show and putting (plus approaching) for dough on the PGA TOUR, because Poston proved it this week.
