Although blades and tour-focused irons tend to get the headlines like supercars, it’s the practical models that truly make up the biggest segments of the market. Why? Simple—because they just darn work, and with Ping's newest G740 and i540 irons, they’re built to help make the game easier and more fun.

Let’s start with the G740, Ping’s newest iron designed to produce high launch, consistent spin, distance focused iron engineered for forgiveness.

The G740 iron represents our return to the super-game-improvement-iron category in a more deliberate way. The visibly wider sole and larger clubhead result in the most forgiving iron in our current lineup. At the same time, it’s our longest iron. The target golfer for the G740 iron needs more consistency in their game, and the larger face helps ensure better results from inconsistent strikes, leading to faster speed and more forgiveness.

Speed = Distance

If you want to go longer and higher, you need to go faster, and the Ping G740s achieve this by utilizing an advanced heat treatment process that allows the cast 17-4 stainless steel to be made thinner and more flexible without sacrificing durability. This leads to higher launching shots that come in from a greater descent angle, meaning they can go farther and stop quickly.

Another design element that helps the iron deliver ideal results is a wider dual-cambers sole, which positions the center of gravity lower in the head and lower relative to the equator of a golf ball. It’s little design tweaks like that that add up to performance on the course.

G740 Technology

Getting back to the face, and into the iron cavity, the large faces naturally make the hitting area larger, which in turn leads to more consistent results from added forgiveness. In the cavity the PurFlex cavity badge has three flex zones to tune feel, sound, and control.

The larger head with perimeter weighting creates a ton of forgiveness to generate more consistent distance and gapping. To further help with performance in varying conditions they feature Hydropearl Chrome 2.0 finish to produce spin numbers

The irons also feature custom engineered lofts with have been calibrated through the set to maximize distance gapping and consistency with the help of data analytics.

The more data we analyze through our Arccos partnership, the stronger the case becomes that properly gapped sets play a big part in a golfer’s performance. It’s especially important for many of the golfers who fit the G740 iron profile as they likely need to transition into hybrids and fairway woods somewhere around the five or six iron. I encourage all golfers to look closer at their set make ups to ensure they are playing the best combination of clubs.

The four wedges in the G740 set come with machined faces and grooves for added control and spin.

Ping i540 Irons

Ping i540 iron title.jpg

Designed for golfers looking for more speed and stoping power in a players distance iron, the Ping i540 packs a ton of tech into a smaller package.

The popularity of the Players Distance iron category continues to grow as more and more golfers are in search of faster speeds from an iron with a blade-style look. There’s a lot of technology in the i540 iron. Inside the head, tungsten sole weighting lowers the center of gravity and combines with the forged maraging-steel face to produce faster ball speeds. We’ve also applied inR-Air technology to improve the feel and sound.

Send It & Stop IT

With this new iron design, distance is gained by a combination of tungsten sole weights in the longer (4-7) irons, and a flexible C300 face to provide more ball speed. This help the face and body of the iron act like a shrunked down hollow metal wood to generate fast ball speeds along with a higher trajectory.

i540 Technology

To give the irons a more solid feel without slowing down the face, the i540s feature inR-Air, a technology that was originally introduced in the iDi driving iron to fine tune impact frequencies.

This patent-pending technology utilizes an air pocket behind the face to dull unwanted frequencies and deliver a more solid feeling at impact. This works with the rear i-Beam structure inside the stainless-steel body to support the face and make it Ping's most stable and longest player's distance iron to date.

This type of iron construction always presents sound and feel challenges. The pocket of air inside the i540 iron is a great solution for softening the frequencies and improving the impact experience. It’s proven to be very successful in the iDi driving iron, and we’re excited to bring this technology to golfers in a full set of irons.
