Heading into the final round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Daniel Berger has showcased some fantastic golf around Bay Hill Golf Club. One of the keys to his success has been his driving, which has allowed him to approach the firm greens from more ideal places and lead the field in strokes gained approach.

Now, one thing is for certain: Bay Hill is not an easy driving test, especially with so much water, and fairways lined with longer rough than what is typically found at most PGA TOUR setups. Once you add in the wind, it becomes even more difficult. (See: Berger's final third-round tee shot this morning in the elements.) This is why consistency is critical.

One way to find more consistency off the tee is to use a forgiving driver that helps to reduce variations in spin, and leading into this week, the newly minted Ping staffer talked specifically about his driver and its ability to control spin on the PING Proving Grounds Podcast hosted by Shane Bacon and Ping's Marty Jertson.

The reason spin stability helps is that when the driver spin is more stable and on axis (meaning it curves less), the ball will be less affected by the wind.

A lot of golfers believe that lower spin is the key to distance, but lower spin that gets too low or off-axis on missed shots is exponentially worse than spin that may be just above average but more stable.

So the next time you're looking at your driver numbers, be like Daniel Berger and focus on consistent numbers over unreliable distance.
