Raingear aside, The Open also serves as a masterclass on how to (and how to not) style layers. My favorite layering piece? A cardigan.
They're light-weight, versatile, and a great way to dress up a casual fit. I mean look at Arnold Palmer, "The King" of golf cardigans. He was always so put together, embracing a casual coolness that's ever-lasting and often imitated, but never duplicated—you can't teach that kind of aura.

But Justin Thomas and Jason Day at the 2025 Open Championship came pretty damn close.
While yet another JDay/Malbon look commanded the attention of golf fanatics on Thursday's opening day—don't let Thomas' efforts fall by the wayside.
Outfitted in Greyson, JT kept things classy, rocking hues of blue highlighted by his deep navy knit cardigan. It's nothing we haven't seen before from him, but it's a reminder that it works so well. Thomas isn't trying hard, it's an effortless approach to the layering piece. It doesn't have to be complicated, but it should be intentional. The Open is the perfect stage for such a look.

And then there's the drippiest (is that a word?) man in golf, who has once again sparked chatter about where golf style, especially across the Tours, is severely lacking. The Aussie stepped out in an unreleased cotton cashmere cardigan that will probably keep me up at night for the foreseeable future.

It was subtly loud, not distracting, but you can't seem to look away. It's the blueprint on how to wear a cardigan and it well. Keep it clean, minimal in color, and let it do the talking.
It's a gentle kind of flex. A man who can wear them with confidence is the ultimate hot/cool guy move.
