Jason Day’s Cardigan Carried the Day at The Open

Jason Day made a statement at the Open. The rest of the field… didn’t.

Twenty years ago, Ian Poulter turned heads at the Open Championship by wearing the Claret Jug, literally. It was screen-printed across his left leg in full silver glory, the type of brash statement that felt appropriately British and unapologetically bold.

This year, Jason Day may have been the only one channeling that same energy.

His Thursday look, a cotton-cashmere cardigan from Malbon’s Royal Kingston capsule, didn’t just show up, it performed. The black knit featured abstract symbols nodding to playing cards and British heritage, finished with white piping around the collar and sleeves. It looked like something from a downtown gallery show, not the first tee at Royal Troon. And that’s exactly why it worked.

Paired with tailored black trousers, a visor, and white spikes, Day’s fit was clean and composed despite the cardigan’s chaos. It felt considered. Intentional. Stylish, even. But more than that, it felt like golf fashion taking a swing.

Because the rest of the field? Missed badly. Opening day at the 152nd Open was one of the drabbest in recent memory. Safe polos, safe quarter-zips, safe pants. The kind of color palette that makes oatmeal look spicy. There were plenty of layers, but not much layering. It all looked like a dress rehearsal for an airport security line.

Which makes Day’s look even more important. It gave us a reason to talk about golf fashion outside of fabrics and forecasts. It brought personality back to the party. That’s what style is supposed to do, especially at a major.
