Greenskeepers are the Unsung Heroes of Golf. Here’s How to Dress Like One

Golf and workwear is a match made in turf-science heaven

What would golf be without its superintendents and grounds crews? The unsung heroes of the game are always operating in the background; mowing and watering in the pre-dawn hours, repairing and seeding at dusk. They work on the hottest days of the year, the coldest days of the year, and every day in between, fixing your divots and pitch marks, pulling weeds, and occasionally going to war with the myriad vermin that love to make their home on the golf course.

They’re like the crew that cleans Disneyland — you never see anyone cleaning, but if they didn’t exist, the place would be in absolute disrepair.

But greenskeepers don’t only keep the course in tip-top shape. They give us utilitarian style inspo that everyone who plays golf should incorporate into their on-course outfits.

Workwear has long been a source of inspiration for the fashion world, and things are no different in the golf world. Pants with five or six useful pockets, bucket hats for keeping the sun at bay, and hard-wearing polos that stand up to sweat, dirt, and repeated cycles through the washing machine — a greenskeeper’s uniform is full of go-to silhouettes for the discerning golfer.

While some of our favorite brands acknowledge the work of the greenskeeper directly (looking at Manors and Walker Golf Things), other brands pay tribute to workwear without even thinking about it. Go beyond the golf style sphere and you’ll find plenty of workwear that easily finds purchase on the golf course, from chef pants and farm pants to trucker hats and camo shorts.

I am a big fan of rocking workwear on the links, so I got together some of my favorites for teeing it up. Whether you’re a die-hard workwear enthusiast or just want to incorporate some hard-wearing, utilitarian gear into your on-course wardrobe, I’ve got a pick that’ll have folks mistaking you for grounds crew in no time (and that’s a compliment).
