They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, and that might be true, but after sitting on the sidelines of golf fashion (and fashion in general) for most of my life, I'm learning that you can at least teach a fashion skeptic to embrace change and upgrade their style. And it takes a lot less effort than you might think!
As a guy getting closer to 40 than I would like to admit, I realize that I am not the reigning beacon of style and fashion I once was. Sure, my clothes are up to date, but up to modern fashion trends, not even close. Unless you consider Costco Kirkland Signature hoodies cutting-edge (I still love them, and that's not changing).

I prefer to stick closer to the golf norms that have framed the last decade and avoid most gear that might not show up on your local country club's dress code.
The problem was that I also felt like I was in a bit of a slump and needed a change. So to bring some new life to my wardrobe, I reached out to Skratch's own style guys, Raymond Williams and Ben Boskovich, to set me straight, and after a recent trip to Southern California and Arizona with a few new staples, I realized I not only looked better, but I felt better and more comfortable too.

The change was simple: wide-legged pants, including cargos that were lightweight and flexible. The pants of choice were the Uniqlo Wide Cargos, which I can now attest to owning in every color option. It's currently available in four neutral shades: dark green, khaki, black, and brown.

The fit is loose with a tapered silhouette, which gives them a bit more shape toward the hem. The pants are also finished with a drawstring for a little extra customization at the ankle. The fabric is a cotton-nylon blend that's structured with enough stretch for all-day wear and comfort, even out on a hot day. As for care, nothing special needed either, just wash in a normal gentle cycle and hang to dry.
It might seem simple, but if there is one thing I've been able to bring from my knowledge base of golf gear, it's that being open to understanding new ideas and processes is the best way to operate, and when in doubt, seek out experts in the field.
If I'm going to be a little too honest, I will also admit that a big reason for staying away from big changes was the fear of looking silly trying something new - I didn't want to end up as the true personification of the Steve Buscemi meme, or Grandpa Simpson.

But, as the saying goes, "Our greatest fears lie in anticipation." And, with some very simple styling, I was way more excited than nervous to get to the course and feel more.
