I'm Still Thinking About: The Kirkland Signature Golf Ball

Although the original hype has faded, this golf ball remains a staple in Costco stores and should be a top-of-mind choice for value shopping golfers.

I can still remember the initial days when Costco released the original Kirkland Signature Golf Ball and the collective golf world lost its mind. From YouTube reviews claiming it to be the best ball ever made, to online forums sharing store locations where you could grab stock, and even resellers flipping single dozens for more than $100 on eBay, it was a moment in golf gear history that I won't soon forget.

Now in version 3.0, the Kirkland Signature golf ball has grown up and become a staple on Costco shelves, and at just $30 for a double dozen ($35 shipping from Costco.com), it remains the undisputed best value in golf, especially considering it's a 3-piece urethane cover construction.

The reason the Kirkland Signature golf ball occupies so much space in my brain is that it's a proven fact that golfers of all skill levels can benefit from a urethane-covered golf ball, but beyond the Kirkland, those options start at double the price - and that's in the direct-to-consumer market. Once you start looking at the bigger manufacturers that are making products tied to tour players, that price goes up again to triple that of the Kirkland.

(Sorry to my big OEM friends, it's just the truth)

But let me be clear, this isn't a discussion about maximum tour-level performance or trying to get every last yard and short game RPM out of a golf ball. We can leave that up to the big companies that make multiple premium golf ball offerings, and those golfers who place a premium on performance over everything else.

Story Time

This all comes to a head because I was recently the "random single" paired up with an existing group of three golfers at a local public course. All three were very recreational players who didn't seem overly concerned with score, but even then (like any golfers) enjoyed the thrill of hitting a great shot at the intended target.

One thing I quickly observed was that none of them had any consistency with the golf ball that they used, and would often switch every couple of holes - this is an absolute score killer. Whether its a two piece distance ball or a premium ball from a major company, using the same ball can immediately bring uniformity to how a shot will react, both off the tee and especially around the green where it's most important.

This is once again where the Kirkland Signature golf ball comes in, because If you're willing spend close to $100 for a tee time, to then invest at least 4 hours playing a game that you want to find some success in, $30 for two dozen urethane-covered performance engineered golf balls its a pretty minor investment.

It's a wonder to me that more golfers don't take advantage of this unmatched value, which is exactly why I can't stop thinking about the Kirkland Signature golf ball.
