This week, the TOUR turns its attention to Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland for the BMW Championship, the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. This will be the second time the TOUR has played this course, with Patrick Cantlay winning in 2021. Since then, the course has undergone some renovations to beef it up against the best players in the world.
This time, two par-5s have been converted to par-4s meaning that the 7,061 yard layout will now be a par-72. While the number of strokes it takes to capture victory may be the same, the score relative to par will certainly be worse than the 27-under par that earned you a spot in a playoff four years ago.
Fresh off his maiden victory in Greensboro, Young didn't miss a beat in Memphis, finishing 5th and gaining 6.082 strokes from tee-to-green. Outside of a disappointing Saturday, he was stellar at TPC Southwind and shot the round of the day (64) in the final round. Caves Valley should reward his strengths—distance off-the-tee and birdie-marking prowess.
Henley has posted five straight Top 20 finishes at a diverse set of courses -- Muirfield Village, Oakmont, TPC River Highlands, Royal Portrush, & TPC Southwind. His game travels to all course types powered by elite approach play and a putter that has gained him 0.49 strokes per round over his last sixteen rounds.
Now down to just 50 golfers in the field, it becomes less likely for someone (or someones) to run away from the pack. With little data on Caves Valley, it appears to be a golf course that won't necessarily allow for a ton of separation. The only other edition in 2021 went to a playoff with Patrick Cantlay edging out Bryson DeChambeau.
