Surprisingly, I don’t have the standard week-after-a-major-championship hangover. I don’t know if last week’s venue had anything to do with it, but it felt more like a signature event than a major.
Anyway, I guess that means I’m ready to watch some golf this weekend and the PGA TOUR is at a true old-school gem for the Charles Schwab Challenge. Colonial Country Club is tree-lined, features small and difficult-to-hit greens, and can get very tricky once the wind starts to blow.
Plus, we have a decent field for an event following a major, that isn’t always the case. World No. 1 and PGA Championship winner Scottie Scheffler is set to tee it up in Fort Worth, Texas, and will be joined by Jordan Spieth, Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler, Tom Kim, Maverick McNealy, and Hideki Matsuyama, among others.
Scheffler is the heavy favorite. I know, right. Shocker! But it’s a little ridiculous at this point. He’s +250 to win the golf tournament! That’s Tiger Woods-type stuff right there. Just crazy.
So he won’t be going on the card from a value standpoint, but let’s dive in and make a few picks.
Colonial Country Club | Par 70 | 7,289 yards
Scottie Scheffler (+250)
Jordan Spieth (+2200)
Daniel Berger (+2500)
Tommy Fleetwood (+2500)
Hideki Matsuyama (+2800)
Maverick McNealy (+3300)
Aaron Rai (+3500)
Harris English (+4000)
Si Woo Kim (+4000)
J.T. Poston (+4500)
Robert MacIntyre (+4500)
J.J. Spaun (+5000)
Davis Thompson (+5500)
Keith Mitchell (+5500)
Davis Riley (+5500)
Brian Harman (+6000)
Michael Kim (+6000)
Ben Griffin (+6500)
Andrew Novak (+6500)
Ryan Gerard (+7000)
Jordan Spieth (22/1)
I need to feel something this week. It’s been awhile since I’ve been emotionally invested in a golf tournament. So, I’m turning to Spieth. He missed the cut at the PGA, an opening round 76 was too much to overcome. However, he fought back with a Friday 68, missing the weekend by just one shot. Love to see the fight from him. Plus, Spieth has played great at Colonial throughout his career, finishing inside the top-25 nine times in 12 appearances, including a win in 2016. That’ll do.
Daniel Berger (25/1)
I’m rocking with DB Strait Vibin’ this week. Have to. If you haven’t been paying attention, this dude is playing some serious golf this season. In 13 starts, he’s made 11 cuts, finished inside the top 25 nine times, and the top 10 twice. He’s back to 25th in the world and up to 15th in the FedEx Cup. As for his history at Colonial, he won there in 2020 and has two other top-25 finishes (2021, 2022). Let’s ride, DB.
J.T. Poston (45/1)
Your favorite golfer’s favorite flusher, Mr. J.T. Poston. Like Berger, he’s just been going about his business this season and has put together quite the run. His only missed cut across 15 starts came at the Sony Open in January, and he’s finished inside the top-25 six times. At the PGA, he tied for fifth. But more importantly, he tied for 11th at the RBC Heritage. There are a lot of similarities between Colonial and Harbour Town, so that stands out. We’ll see if he can keep it rolling.
