Trunk Slammin’: TONS of Big Names Missed the Cut at the PGA Championship

There are plenty of big names who are headed home early after missing the cut at the PGA Championship, including the man who won the Wanamaker here in 2017.

It may not be the best major championship golf course in the world, but Quail Hollow undoubtedly challenged the best players in the world for the first two days of the PGA Championship and many big names are leaving Charlotte, North Carolina on Friday afternoon.

While Matt Fitzpatrick, Scottie Scheffler, and Max Homa are around the lead and with a chance to win, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, and Brooks Koepka are just a few of the names going home.

Big Names Who Missed the Cut at the PGA Championship

Shane Lowry (73-71, +2)

Lowry caught a horrible break when his ball found an old pitch mark on the eighth. He went on to make bogey, and that was the difference. Unreal.

Jordan Spieth (76-68, +2)

The man who needs this tournament to complete the Career Grand Slam put up a valiant effort after a 76 on Thursday, but he came up one shot short.

Hideki Matsuyama (72-73, +3)

After tying for 17th last week in Philly, Matsuyama bogeyed his last hole Friday to miss the cut by a shot. He had just one top-20 in his last six PGA starts entering the week.

Ludvig Aberg (70-75, +3)

An opening-round 1-under 70 was a great start for the Swede, but everything took a turn for the worse on Friday and he signed for a second-round 4-over 75 and now heads home.

Justin Thomas (73-72, +3)

Thomas won the PGA Championship the last time it was staged at Quail Hollow (2017) and entered the week in great form, but a horrible start to his tournament on Thursday was too much to overcome.

Patrick Reed (72-74, +4)

Reed was a sneaky pick coming into the week, but he couldn’t come through for his backers.

Rickie Fowler (73-73, +4)

Fowler played well last week, tying for 15th in Philly. But nothing fell for him over two days.

Min Woo Lee (74-72, +4)

For the winner of the Houston Open, a 74 on Thursday was too much to overcome. Love the turtleneck, though.

Will Zalatoris (72-76, +6)

Willy Z has just one top-20 finish this season and that came all the way back at the American Express in January. Hopefully things will start clicking for him soon.

Patrick Cantlay (74-74, +6)

The man without a major will have to wait another month to try to get his first.

Cameron Smith (78-71, +7)

The Aussie has now missed three straight cuts at major championships.

Brooks Koepka (75-77, +9)

Koepka has been ice-cold in majors since his win at Oak Hill in 2023. It's weird to see him anywhere else but the top of the leaderboard at these events.

Phil Mickelson (79-72, +9)

Lefty took four shots to get out of a greenside bunker on Friday. That'll hurt every time.

Dustin Johnson (78-76, +12)

Not much to say here, folks. Just really, really bad.
