If Shane Lowry misses the cut at the PGA Championship by a shot, we can point to the exact moment that would have made the difference.
The Irishman hit a perfect tee shot down the short par-4 eighth, setting up a great birdie opportunity that would’ve moved him to even-par for the tournament.
But he got screwed.
When he made his way to his ball, it was partially plugged in an old pitch mark. If it was his own pitch mark, he could have taken relief. If this round was being played as lift, clean, and place, he could have taken relief.
No dice, though, folks.
Lowry was forced to play it from there and it didn’t go well. He advanced it just 80 feet into the greenside bunker and failed to get up-and-down from there.
He took a page out of Tyrrell Hatton’s playbook and gave the hole a quick finger.
Been there, Shane. Been there.
With the cutline hovering around 1 over, he has some work to do to make the weekend.
