Wyndham Clark had a tough few days at the U.S. Open last week. He shot consecutive rounds of 74 to post 8-over through 36 holes, missing the weekend by a shot. A frustrating thing? For sure, but what he did to the Oakmont locker room was a tough look.
His game was in a better spot Thursday at the more-friendly host of the Travelers Championship, TPC River Highlands in Cromwell Connecticut. He made seven birdies—including four on his final six holes (Nos. 13, 14, 15, and 18)—and just one bogey to post an opening-round 6-under 64. He’s just two back of early-wave leader Austin Eckroat (8-under 62).
It didn’t take long for a media member to ask him about the locker room incident, and here’s what he had to say.
“Yeah, I mean, I've had a lot of highs and lows in my career, especially this year some lows. I made a mistake that I deeply regret. I'm very sorry for what happened" Clark said. “But I'd also like to move on, not only for myself but for Oakmont, for the USGA, and kind of focus on the rest of this year and things that come up. I still want to try to make the Ryder Cup team. I still am on the outside looking in for the FedExCup. So I'm starting to move on and focus on those things.”
In 16 previous starts entering the Travelers, the 2023 U.S. Open winner had just one top-10 finish, and that was back at the Houston Open in March. He’s down to 27th in the Official World Golf Rankings, is 80th in the FedEx Cup Standings, and 23rd in the U.S. Ryder Cup Points List.
He has some work to do before Captain Keegan Bradley puts his team together for Bethpage.
