By now, I think we all know that Golden State Warriors point guard and three-point shooting legend Steph Curry is also a stick at golf.
But four-time NBA Champion is also doing something really, really special for junior and amateur golf. Curry launched his Underrated golf tour in 2022, with the initiative to grant more opportunities to kids of color to grow and gain experience in competitive golf.
On their website, Curry and the Underrated team have this mission statement, "Underrated Golf believes the game of golf is for everyone, but we know that there is significant work to be done to make it a just, fair and inspiring sport for all. We are building that foundation from the bottom up, offering young overlooked golfers special programming experiences including an ongoing speaker series and networking events with brands and corporations, allowing them to understand what it means to make connections and build a successful career."
This is the good stuff. The thing that makes our game a better, more well-rounded space.
With around 100 kids, split fairly equally between girls and boys, Underrated travels across the country for its regional tournaments. This year they played at the Eisenhower Golf Course in Colorado Springs, the Pete Dye Course at French Lick in Indiana, the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA WEST in Palm Springs, and Dye's Valley & THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.
The tour has a season-end championship, The Curry Cup, that's being contest this week, just outside of the Big Apple at Liberty National in Jersey City.
Only the top 28 boys and girls from the season-long standings have advanced to the cup—so let's get into what the week will hold.
With the striking lower Manhattan skyline as its back drop, Liberty National has to be one of the most stunning courses on the east coast.
Having hosted the LPGA over the last three years, and a handful of PGA TOUR events including a Presidents Cup—this course is no stranger to elite golf play.
It feels like the perfect setting for a season-ending competition—what a treat for these kids.
The three day event consists of a pro am and practice round before two days of stroke play competition. A winner will be crowned for the boys division and for the girls division.
Get to know each of the players and their backgrounds.
Hopefully by next year there's a way to stream the action, but despite the competition not being televised, stay tuned into the live leaderboard for scoring, and lock in on the Underrate Tour social channels.
They are pumping out some incredible content, and it's a way to get to know these players, their ambitions, and their journeys.
