Scottie Scheffler has left Dublin, Ohio, as the Memorial champion for the last two years, but the vibes haven’t been as good so far in 2026. On Thursday, he let his frustration boil over at the par-3 16th after finding the water, and on Friday morning, he hit a shank out of a greenside bunker.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the dreaded S-word from the World No. 1. He did the same thing at the TOUR Championship a few years back.
After posting a 1-over 73 during round one, Scheffler was even par through his first four holes on Friday when his second shot found a greenside bunker on the par-5 fifth.

What happened next was relatable and not relatable at the same time.
Making par after hitting a shank is something we mere mortals know nothing about. Leave it to the World No. 1 to show us how it’s done.
Ryan Gerard was 8 under for the tournament through 14 holes of his second round, putting Scheffler nine shots back of the lead. He has some serious work to do if he wants to shake Jack Nicklaus’ hand for the third straight year.
