What the Sports World Looked Like the Last Time Scottie Missed a Cut

The streak is over. Scottie Scheffler has missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open, marking the first time he didn’t play the weekend since August 2022, when he came up short at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

That got us thinking: what else was going on in the sports world at that time? You may want to sit down for this one. And prepare to feel old.

The LIV Drama Was Just Beginning

That's right. Back when Scottie last missed the cut, we were still in the very early stages of LIV. The new league–which had poached stars like Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau just a few months earlier–had hosted just three events.

Reigning Open Champion Cam Smith was still a couple weeks away from officially signing, though the rumor mill was swirling. It would be more than a year before Jon Rahm moved over to the Saudi-backed start-up. Rahm finished T5 that week in August, with Smith a few spots behind at T13.

Current Sports Stars Were Just Getting Started

The current Formula 1 points leader, Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), was just a 15-year-old kid racing in the Italian F4 Championship - of course, you could argue that at 19, he is still very much a kid in Formula 1. Clearly, Kimi had a knack for racing because he won 13 times that season in F4.

In August 2022, after a breakout season and questions about when he would finally win, Will Zalatoris secured his first PGA TOUR victory. Unfortunately, injuries have kept him mostly sidelined and it remains his only TOUR win.

It's also hard to believe that the last time Scottie Scheffler missed a cut, Victor Wembanyama, a finalist for this year's NBA MVP, was just 18 years old and playing professional basketball in France’s LNB League for the LDLC ASVEL. That is a very long way from playing for the San Antonio Spurs where he made it to the NBA Finals but lost to the Knicks in 5-games.

Other Careers Were Winding Down

Tom Brady (no, I'm not turning this into a GOAT debate) had retired that February, hanging up the cleats after his second season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Forty days later, he had decided he had one more season in him, returning to the Bucs for the 2022 season. That's right–Tom Brady was still playing professional football when Scottie last missed a cut.

A few months after Brady's faux retirement and not long before Scottie missed the cut at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Serena Williams announced her retirement from professional tennis. In a funny bit of timing, Scottie Scheffler's made-cut streak lasted longer than Serena Williams' first retirement.
