In case you forgot, Rory McIlroy won the Masters—I just like to say that as much as possible, to be honest.
He rocked his Green Jacket and paid a visit to the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night and touched on his mindset during the final round, receiving texts after his win, and even chipped some balls into a washing machine like the good ole days.
“Everyone comes up to me and they’re like, ‘Oh, you don’t know what you put us through on that Sunday,’” McIlroy told Fallon. “I was like, ‘How do you think I was feeling?’”
He explained that his mindset during the final round was that if he shot 4-under, he would win the tournament. He wanted to stay in his own little world, try not to worry about what Bryson DeChambeau was doing, and just handle his own business. Of course, it didn’t go exactly according to plan, but he still got it done.
As for the people who reached out to McIlroy after the win, a few stood above the rest.
“I was sort of overwhelmed with the people that reached out from all different walks of life, you know, culture, entertainment. But the one that got me was Sir Elton John. That was, like, incredible. So I haven’t actually been able to connect with him. So, his assistant left me a voicemail and said, ‘Sir Elton would love to congratulate you in person. The only problem is, he doesn’t have a cellphone. So you might get a call from a number in Windsor, England, from a landline.’”
“It’s so cool. I didn’t even know if Elton John knew was golf was.”
But what Tiger Woods sent him gave me goosebumps.
“Welcome to the club, kid.”
Maybe the coolest text message anyone has ever gotten in the history of everything? If you’re somehow unaware, the “club” is the group of men who have won all four major championships, AKA the Career Grand Slam. McIlroy joined Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, and Gene Sarazen.
Elite, elite company.
To end his visit, McIlroy and Fallon had a chip-off into washing machines just like the Northern Irishman used to do as a kid. This is the #GoodStuff.
After a tie for 12th alongside Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic last week, McIlroy will tee it up in the Truist Championship next week before heading to Quail Hollow for the PGA Championship.
You can’t win all four majors in a year if you don’t win the first two, am I right?
