When shopping for new clubs, the number of choices can make the process feel very overwhelming, especially when it comes to choosing the right iron for your game. So with the goal of opening your mind to a few under-appreciated options that just might fit the bill if you’re a golfer looking for added forgiveness and distance, here are three top irons I think are worth trying.
At the core and literally in the core of the 0311P Gen7 irons is QuantumCOR, PXG’s most innovative polymer yet, which is the result of PXG engineers always pushing to find new materials that deliver speed and distance without sacrificing PXG’s soft, solid feel at impact.
The combination of PXG’s QuantumCOR material with their extremely thin face construction offers the company’s largest single ball speed and distance jump between generations in PXG’s history. Also part of the 0311P Gen7 irons is the addition of a titanium ring around the signature middle weight. The lightweight titanium insert saves 5 grams, which can be redistributed inside the head to boost MOI and forgiveness.
The JPX 925 Hot Metal is Mizuno's hottest line to date (Pun mostly intended).
Not only does it offer speed and forgiveness, but Mizuno puts a premium on offering irons that deliver in the feel category, and with the help of their signature Nickel Chromoly material, they can deliver on all fronts. The irons also feature additional tungsten weighting low in the head to lower the center of gravity to increase launch, boost MOI, and increase stopping power.
The line also features a pro model and an HL (high Launch) option for golfers looking for a more compact profile or in need of more launch and spin.
The DS-Adapt irons are packed with technologies to optimize speed and forgiveness including Cobra’s HOT face, foam microspheres for improved sound, plus a reworked weighting system in the PWR-Bridge to lower the center of gravity. They also utilize a larger 360 SpeedShell to increase face deflection, leading to more speed, height, and stopping power.
The final piece of the technology puzzle is TecFlo construction, which utilizes club-specific design technologies through the sets to optimize distance gapping and performance. For example, the 4-7 irons are built with a hollow cavity filled with lightweight foam microspheres, finished with the SpeedShell construction to help get you there on longer approach shots, while the 8-PW focus on distance and precision by offering the same hollow-plus-foam configuration but without the SpeedShell.
