Max Homa and Longtime Caddie Joe Greiner Have Split—And That Sucks

The close friends won six times on the PGA TOUR and played in a Ryder Cup and two Presidents Cups.

Max Homa and longtime caddie Joe Greiner have split. Reported by the PGA TOUR shortly after Homa teed off at the Valero Texas Open with Bill Harke on the bag, it comes as a bit of a shock given the pair’s close relationship and past success. Regardless, Max needed a change.

“Joe and I made memories for a lifetime and can’t be more thankful for all the hard work," Max said in a statement. "We have parted ways and it will be sad to see him go. I’ll always be grateful to have walked the fairways with one of my best friends.”

Since tying for third at the 2024 Masters, Max has finished inside the top 20 just once in his last 20 starts. During that span, he’s missed seven cuts and withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open in February. He enters this week’s Valero Texas Open with four straight missed weekends: WM Phoenix Open, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, and THE PLAYERS.

To put it bluntly, the last 12 months have been a nightmare for the former world No. 5—he now sits at 78th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Joe had been with Max since the beginning, including Max’s first PGA TOUR win at the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship. Following their victory in Charlotte, the pair went on to win five more times from 2021-2023: ‘21 Genesis Invitational, ‘21 Fortinet Championship, ‘22 Wells Fargo, ‘22 Fortinet Championship, and ‘23 Farmers Insurance Open. Joe was also on the bag at the ‘23 Ryder Cup and ‘21 and ‘24 Presidents Cups.

This isn’t the only change Max has gone through in the last few months. He started playing Cobra clubs at the beginning of the year and also said goodbye to FootJoy, signing an apparel deal with Lululemon. He’s also ridden the coaching carousel a bit, moving on from Mark Blackburn late last year and now working with John Scott Ratten.

I can’t imagine how frustrating this all is for Max. He consistently showed he could be one of the best players in the world for several years, and now he can’t earn weekend tee times.

Golf is fickle. One day you’re on top of the world and next you’re fighting every aspect of your game. The world-class talent is in there somewhere, Max just needs to find it again.
