Justin Thomas has a new caddie at the Masters this week: Joe Greiner. If that name is familiar to you, it should be. Greiner was Max Homa’s caddie for years until the good friends split up before last week’s Valero Texas Open.
“It was not my choice so it sucked, but we always had a deal that we're friends first and friendship mattered more than the work thing, and he was wise enough to do what he did,” Homa said Wednesday at Augusta National.
“It sucks because I just pictured always walking fairways with Joe. But again, that's not—that was not the deal. I would rather walk life with Joe forever than this dumb game. So it's been hard to process, but also good in a way, because friendship does matter more than any of this stuff.”
Since finishing T-3 at the Masters in 2024, Homa has just one top-20 finish and eight missed cuts across 21 starts. He’s fallen to No. 81 in the Official World Golf Ranking and is entering this year’s Masters with five straight missed cuts.
As for Thomas, he had Jimmy Johnson on the bag during the early stages of his career before moving on to Jim “Bones” Mackay in September 2021. Those two split right before last year’s Masters and Thomas has had Matt Minister by his side since. Minister hurt his back, forcing Thomas to make a call to the bullpen.
JT and Greiner have been in a few team rooms together over the years at the 2022 Presidents Cup and 2023 Ryder Cup.
Plus, Greiner is one of the best caddies in the sport, so it’s no surprise that JT called his number.
