Golfers are sick in the head. The things we do in an effort to shed a single stroke would make any onlooker think we’re some sort of science experiment gone wrong. The best part? The most-talented players in the world are the exact same way. Just read this quote from Jordan Spieth after his first round of the Sony Open on Thursday.

“Frankly, just I put in a 3-iron like two days ago and it cost me two and a half shots,” Spieth said, “the shots I hit with that club. I'm going to go back to my hybrid and I'll be better off.”
Why the last-second decision?
“Well, I think a driving iron, it's just a driving iron course, like here and The Open,” Spieth said. “The problem is I had four months to get ready for this week and I dug five 3-irons out and I hit them the day before I came here and then I brought them all here and then I was trying to figure out which one I liked here and they were all good. And so then I got to pick one, and it just—I just haven't been playing with it, so I think I'm going to just go back to the hybrid.”

Those are the words of a crazy person. That thought process belongs to someone bound to a straitjacket—or, you know, just any golfer I know. Still, Spieth’s crazy is on another level, and that’s why we love him so much. He’s just the best.
The Texan was a little up and down during his first 18 holes at Waialae, making six birdies and four bogeys on his way to an opening 2-under 68. In five previous Sony Open appearances, Spieth missed three cuts, tied for 18th in 2018, and grabbed solo third in 2017.
