While you were probably sleeping—unless you’re a sicko like me and set an alarm for the wee hours of Thursday morning—Jacob Skov Olesen, Haotong Li, and Matt Fitzpatrick shot matching 4-under 67s to share the early lead at Royal Portrush.
But the host of The Open wasn’t that kind to Bryson DeChambeau early in his opening round.
The Open: How to Watch | Tee Times
After three straight pars to open, DeChambeau’s drive down the fourth found the native area just off the left side of the fairway. He advanced his second shot nearly 150 yards, but it ended up in a horrible spot right of the fairway.
The ball was way above his feet, and he needed to hit a baseball off a tee with this third. Then, uh, well, he missed the ball. Just whiffed it.
He was able to advance it with his second try, and he went on to make a double-bogey six at the par-4.
There’s still a lot of golf to be played, and Bryson will have plenty of opportunities to get those shots back. However, The Open hasn’t been too kind to him throughout his career. His best finish was a tie for eighth at St. Andrews in 2022—it’s his only top-50 finish in the tournament.
