Brooks Koepka has never missed the weekend at a PGA Championship. He’s 12/12. But that streak is in danger at Quail Hollow. The three-time Wanamaker winner stumbled to an opening-round 4-over 75 on Thursday and was tied for 67th when he signed his card.
His iron play was the biggest downfall, as he lost over 1.6 strokes to the morning wave. Also doesn’t help that he only got up-and-down 45 percent of the time.
Since missing the cut at the Masters, Koepka has finished T-30 (Mexico City) and T-17 (Korea) in two LIV Golf starts. In all, he has just one top-five finish on the Saudi-backed circuit this season.
Majors in general haven’t been kind to the 35-year-old since he captured his fifth at Southern Hills two years ago. He’s finished T-17, T-64, T-45, T-26, T-26, T-43, and MC in the last seven.
He won’t tee off Friday too far from the cut line, this place is tough, but he’ll have some serious work to do if he plans on contending for his fourth PGA title.
