Man, it felt good to watch Max Homa golf his ball on Friday.
Once ranked fifth in the world, Homa has been searching. And searching. At last week’s Truist Championship, I saw him hitting balls late Thursday afternoon looking for anything he could bring to the course with him. He’s been adamant that his feels on the range just haven’t been there when he’s had a scorecard in his hand, but that seemed to change on this day.
After opening with a 2-over 73 on Thursday, Homa started with a birdie on the 10th, his first hole of the day. He added another on the par-3 13th before a big bird at the 14th after nearly making a one at the par 4. Truly one of the best shots we’ve seen this year.
And he wasn’t done supplying the highlight reel with material.
After draining a 15-footer on the 15th for birdie, Homa chipped in short of the 18th green to make the turn in 30, nine shots better than what he posted on Quail Hollow’s second nine on Thursday.
On his way home, he poured in a 33-footer on the third but immediately gave it back on the par-3 fourth. But he took care of the par-5 seventh to get back to 7 under on his day. After a missed six-footer on the eighth for another birdie, Homa navigated the monster par-4 ninth despite finding the rough off the tee and completed his 64.
One hell of an 18 holes from the fan favorite.
But the best part was watching Max get his smile back. His swagger. He was confidently standing over every shot, and was walking in putts like we saw so many times a few years ago when he was on top of the game.
His resume is missing a major championship, but he enters the weekend with a great chance to change that.
Let’s see it for another two days, Max.
