ERIN, WIS. — Playing in a major is already challenging enough. Playing in a major at Erin Hills is another thing. But imagine playing in the U.S. Women's Open at Erin Hills without your own clubs. For Amari Avery, the worst case scenario that could have happened, happened.
During Friday afternoon's coverage, Golf Channel’s Paige Mackenzie reported that someone tried to break into Avery’s rental house, she and her boyfriend packed up and went to a hotel.
Understandably shaken, and wanting to get the hell out of there, Avery put all her belongings in her travel bag, which is allegedly identical to the one her boyfriend owns. Her boyfriend took Avery’s bag by mistake Friday morning when he left for Los Angeles.
When she rolled up to the course on Friday, it was said that she didn't even have a hat to wear, but her friend and fellow USC Trojan Gabi Ruffels came in clutch, letting Avery use her clubs—and, borrow her visor (both are Nike athletes). Literally, what an incredible friend, are you kidding me?!
What's even crazier is that Avery is lowkey balling out! She's 1-under thru 12, 2-under for the tournament, sitting pretty at T-20.
This is the 20 year old's first USWO as a pro. Her name may ring a bell, as she was a junior golf sensation, starring in Netflix's "The Short Game"—a documentary that followed an elite cohort of young golfers competing in the World Championships of Junior Golf.
It's reported that Avery's boyfriend's mom is flying to Erin Hills with Avery’s clubs so that she’ll have them for Round 3.
