Shane Lowry has had a long week around Oakmont Country Club.
It’s a bit of a surprise since he’s played well all season and entered the 2016 U.S. Open at this very course with a four-shot lead—he went on to earn the silver medal, but still, it was a good week for the Irishman.
Well, after posting a 9-over 79 on Thursday, Friday hasn’t been much better. He had one birdie, four bogeys, and a double on the card when he was playing the par-4 14th. His second shot came up short in the rough, and he chipped it more than 50 feet past the hole with his third.
But then something happened that got a big laugh from playing partner and good buddy Rory McIlroy.
Lowry just picked up his ball. Yup, he forgot to mark it. All he could do was laugh.
He was penalized a shot and took a six on the par-4. He’ll miss the weekend in Pittsburgh.
