Rory McIlroy’s driver is one of the biggest storylines of the week at Oakmont Country Club—as ridiculous as that sounds.
Earlier this year, he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, THE PLAYERS, and the Masters with a TaylorMade Qi10. But at the PGA Championship, the face was deemed nonconforming, forcing him to take it out of the bag. He went on to finish T-47 at Quail Hollow, a track he’s made a habit of dominating throughout his career.
At the RBC Canadian Open, he did some testing with the Qi35, TaylorMade’s latest offering, but he struggled off the tee and missed the cut after posting a 78 on Friday.
Well, he’s back to old faithful at the U.S. Open, and Golf Channel’s Eamon Lynch reported that his setup is “as close as possible” to the one he used at Augusta National.

He played nine holes early Wednesday morning and went to the range afterward to get some more swings in with the big stick.
Rory’s coming into the year’s third major championship with six straight top-10s at the U.S. Open, including back-to-back silver medals in 2024 (Pinehurst No. 2) and 2023 (Los Angeles Country Club).
Oakmont demands perfection off the tee, so we’ll see if Rory has his driver dialed in once he tees off the 10th alongside Shane Lowry and Justin Rose on Thursday at 7:40 a.m. ET.
