Patrick Reed, welcome to the U.S. Open!
After making a bogey on the par-4 second, PReed hit the fairway on the par-5 fourth and had 286 yards to the flag. Then he did the unthinkable…
He made it for a two!
It was the fourth double-eagle in recorded U.S. Open history and the first since 2012 (Nick Watney, 2012).
The rest of his round, however, was tough. From the fifth hole on, he made just two more birdies and carded four bogeys and closed with a triple on the 18th. Not great.
So, as to be expected, he wasn't really thrilled to talk about his historic two after the round.
"There's 71 other holes we have to play...One hole doesn't mean jack, to be honest with you," he said. As for the club, all he said was, "It was a 3-wood I hit from 287, and it went in."
At the Masters earlier this year, Reed had another hole-out. This one came at the par-4 17th:
In the end, Reed signed for a 3-over 73 on Thursday at Oakmont, and will enter the second round seven shots off J.J. Spaun's lead.
