For the first time in his career, Jordan Spieth was forced to withdraw from a PGA TOUR event at the Travelers Championship a few weeks back due to a neck injury. Seeing him struggle to leave the golf course was tough to watch.
However, it was a bit of a surprise to see his name missing from the field list for this week’s Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club—not only does he love links golf, he’s played in the last three editions.
Some thought that was an indication that the neck injury he sustained at TPC River Highlands was more serious than originally thought, but it also put into question his status for the year’s final men’s major championship, The Open at Royal Portrush next week.
However, during an appearance on Up & Adams with Kay Adams, Spieth confirmed that he’s good to go for The Open.
“I’m good,” Spieth said. “It was a weird neck spasm thing that just came up… I’ve been back to full strength getting ready for The Open Championship… I have no restrictions which is great.”
Portrush last hosted The Open in 2019, a tournament Irishman Shane Lowry won, and Spieth tied for 20th after a tough final-round 77.
In his two starts prior to the WD, Spieth tied for 23rd at the U.S. Open and grabbed a share of seventh at the Memorial. Put that together with his nine straight top-30 finishes at The Open, including a win in 2017, and we might see the Texan make a run at the Claret Jug.
