Jordan Spieth, You Have Our Attention at the Charles Schwab Challenge

Colonial Country Club feels like the perfect place for Jordan Spieth to break his three-year winless drought. Doesn't hurt that he loves playing in his home state.

Last week didn’t go as planned for Jordan Spieth. He was trying to follow in Rory McIlroy’s footsteps and complete the Career Grand Slam, but after an opening-round 76 at Quail Hollow, he’ll have to wait a year to try to capture his Wanamaker Trophy.

But you have to give him credit, he fought. He came back Friday and made two bogeys, three birdies, and an eagle to post a 3-under 68. It got him just one shot short of the cut line. A tough pill to swallow, yes, but I think his second-round performance could help to carry some momentum into this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge.

He’s loved Colonial Country Club throughout his career. In 12 starts at the Fort Worth, Texas, gem, Spieth has eight top-10 finishes, three silver medals, and a win back in 2016. It’s safe to say the Texan is pretty comfortable playing in the Lone Star State.

This season alone, he’s tied for 12th at the Valero Texas Open and grabbed solo fourth with a final-round 62 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson in two starts in his home state. The man loves sleeping in his own bed. Hell, who could blame him?

And if you’re worried about him after a missed weekend in Charlotte, don’t be. He’s played some great golf throughout the season and I expect that to continue at Colonial.

Before his MC at the PGA Championship, Spieth had made 10 of 11 cuts, finished inside the top-25 six times, and the top-10 thrice.

The one thing going against him—aside from Scottie Scheffler being in the field—is that he’s failed to get a W over the finish line since the 2022 RBC Heritage. That’s right, it’s been over three years since Spieth won on the PGA TOUR. That seems impossible, but here we are.

He could reach out to good buddy Justin Thomas for some advice on ending winless droughts—JT won at Harbour Town Golf Links for his first win since the ‘22 PGA—but I have a feeling he won’t need it.

When Spieth’s game is clicking, he’s a killer. His putter turns into a weapon and his short game gets him out of trick spots—let’s be honest, it’s only a matter of time until this guy gets into one of those, that’s why we love him.

However, he made it onto my betting card this week for one reason: I need to feel something. I want to have a rooting interest. I want to ride the always unpredictable Spieth roller coaster. I want to be there when he wins for the first time in three years.

This is the perfect spot for him to do it. Now he’s just gotta tee it up.
