In the world of forged golf clubs there is one name that has been synonymous with pure craftsmanship and endless pursuit of the perfect feel - Miura Golf, and yesterday it was announced that the man who founded that pursuit Katsuhiro Miura, or Miura-san had passed away.
It’s extremely difficult to quantify the impact Miura-san has had on equipment industry and the game of golf as a whole, but one thing is for ceratin, his attention to detail and devotion to passing on the tradition of forging and hand grinding irons is something that will be continued by his sons Shinei and Yoshitaka.
His introduction to golf club manufacturing began when he was just 16 years old, but after seeing the way club heads were forged, he believed there was a better way, and not long after founded his own company - Miura Golf.
The trademark of the Miura Way was a process that Katsuhiro came up with to ensure that the body of the iron was perfectly compressed during the forging process, and it involved forging the head separate from the hosel (where the shaft goes into the head) then spin-welding a perfectly machined hosel to the iron body.
Over the years, many players requested Miura to make their iron heads because of the unmatched level of quality and the feel they produced. You can search to the ends of the internet to find specific models made for various manufacturers that were actually produced by Katsuhiro Miura, but over time many players went as far to search out Miura on their own.
One such golfer is Adam Scott, who was also one of the first people on social media to acknowledge Miura-san’s passing. He made a well-documented visit to the factory in Himeji, Japan, where he had the privilege of sitting in the last seat of the grinding house - a place reserved for Katsuhiro.
He will be dearly missed by his family as well as a huge family of golfers who have put their trust into his hands and his relentless passion for enabling the perfect shot.
