On Wednesday, Keegan Bradley will make the picks that fill out Team USA’s roster for next month’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. For months, it’s been debated whether or not Bradley will use one of those selections on himself. Now, the wait for that decision is almost over—Arnold Palmer in 1963 was the last playing captain at the Ryder Cup.
Six Americans have already automatically qualified for the team: Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley, Harris English, and Bryson DeChambeau. On the assistant captain side of things, Bradley has brought in Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, and Gary Woodland. If he ends up pulling double duty, there’s no doubt that more responsibility will fall on those five gentlemen.
Now, Bradley’s choices wouldn’t be as fun if I didn’t try to predict them beforehand, right? So, here’s who I think will don red, white, and blue in New York from September 26-28.
Justin Thomas
This one feels pretty obvious. He’s turned into the heartbeat of Team USA, and owns a 7-4-2 record in the Ryder Cup. You just don’t leave this guy at home.
Patrick Cantlay
Again, you don’t leave this guy at home during team events. Pair him with Xander Schauffele and just let them go. Easy choice here.
Sam Burns
The best putter on the planet. That will come in handy in New York. Plus, he just went undefeated in Canada at the Presidents Cup last year. Burnsy should go to Bethpage.
Cameron Young
CYoung has started to ball over the last month. In August, he won the Wyndham Championship, grabbed solo fifth at the FedEx St. Jude, solo 11th at the BMW Championship, and tied for fourth at the TOUR Championship. Plus, he’s an unreal course fit for Bethpage and is from New York. No brainer.
Ben Griffin
Fans won’t get excited about this one, but Ben deserves it. Over his last 12 starts, he has 10 finishes of T-14 or better, a silver medal at The Memorial, and a win at the Charles Schwab Challenge. You can’t not include him.
Keegan Bradley
He’s gotta do it. He has to. He’s one of the best 12 Americans in the world, no doubt about it.
