Sim Seeking: A Quiet Nook For The Golf Purist in NYC's Upper East Side

This week we head back uptown to the intimate, no frills of Loftlinks. Here's what I discovered.

It was nice to keep it local last week with X-Golf Brooklyn, but the beauty of Sim Seeking is experiencing every pocket NYC golf life has to offer. Today, we venture up north again to the gorgeous Upper East Side.

Just blocks away from the MET, the Guggenheim, and Central Park (true staples of the city) sits Loftlinks Golf sim. On a quiet block conveniently located close to subway stations, surrounded by small cafes and bakeries, this spot can be easy to miss if you don't know what you're looking for.

Juxtaposed against the previous locations on our running list, who all stand out with massive signage and bright lights flashing to attract foot traffic, Loftlinks is a private, intimate space available by appointment only.

It reminds me of a boutique salon of sorts, it's very clean, with not a lot of bells or whistles, it's just a pure service space providing customers with a quiet place to work on their games. There's a small turf putting green that greets you as soon as you walk in, and the four bays in the space are tucked off into the corner.

There's nothing superfluous about this sim. It's small, sitting on the second floor of a walk-up building, and yet they maximize on what they can without veering into being too much.

This is the kind of indoor golf joint that would attract the data-driven golfer. The kind of person who is just looking to keep their games in enough shape in between rounds and golf trips. While I was there, I watched the steady flow of clientele trickle in and out. It was a mix of the morning crowd getting some swings in before work, the guy who's taking his lunch break but wanted a little short game tune up, and there's even a junior golf membership for the after-school wave.

It's not reserved just for members, anyone can walk in and experience the space, but it does have a strong "if you know, you know" vibe, and not in the bad way. It's a local, small business that's co-existing with bigger franchises like a Five Iron or an X-Golf and for that I can really dig what Co-Founder and CEO Mark Torrens and his Loftlinks team are doing.

They are creating a quiet corner in what is becoming a very lucrative market. Sim golf is expanding, especially in the city, and having different variations of what these spaces will offer is key to the health status of indoor golf.

Loftlinks is the most different among the other places on our Sim Seeking journey, it's undoubtedly for the golf purist who loves the feeling of flushing it on real grass, but makes do during those winter months. But it could also be the perfect place for the beginner golfer, who is building up the confidence to hit shots on the first tee, instead of heading straight to the third or fourth just so now one will see them.

It's well worth a visit.
