Lebron James has done it all: MVPS, Rings, and Olympic Golf Medals. Now, he’s chasing the one opponent no athlete has ever conquered: golf. His first swings on camera famously broke the internet when they came out. As someone who loves to nerd out on golf swings, I loved having the opportunity to look at what the King is doing. Spoiler alert: The King’s got game
We first got a glimpse of his swing this summer during some July 4 rounds in Ohio that got the golf world abuzz. And while many had thoughts on his swing, it was his second day on the course and the King himself captioned the video with "Got a long ass way to go at this sport." Don't we all...
More swing videos dropped throughout the summer and two things were obvious: Lebron's got the golf bug and he's getting enough reps in to already see improvement.
If you needed more proof, here's a video Lebron posted on his account in September playing in an absolute downpour.
Lebron has quickly gone from "playing around during the off season" to a capital G Golfer. He even had Steph Curry imitating his swing at the American Century Championship in Tahoe this year. This swing has taken the sports world by storm, so let's break it down.

He is off to a really good start here. A good setup starts with having your shoulders, hips, and feet all aligned together, and it looks like he has done that well. His shoulders may be a tad open to his target, but that could also be the camera angle. He has a good amount of bend in the knees, and has the proper amount of bend in the upper body (don’t want him standing straight up or leaning too far forward).
The first thing I may suggest for him to work on from here is maybe moving a hair closer to the ball. In a perfect world, you would want your arms relaxed and hanging straight down, and here you can see him reaching a bit (but that isn’t the end of the world).

Again, not too bad. He keeps the clubhead outside of his hands going back, however it is a bit too much. Normally with beginners, they whip the club to the inside, so seeing him do this is encouraging and is a tad bit easier to correct.
One thing to fix would be his left foot is already coming off the ground. There is nothing wrong with that, however you would want that happening a bit later in the backswing, normally when you reach the top.

This is the first point in his swing where we see “beginner” tendencies begin to creep in. The club stops well before reaching the normal “parallel” position. You can see below the position Tiger gets to at the top.
Now let's be clear, I’m not expecting him to be Tiger at this point in his journey, more-so just using that as an example to show.

This part of the swing is normally the hardest to get beginners into a correct position. The golf swing is a rotational move. This is why you normally see baseball and hockey players have a lot of success in golf as they have similar movements.
His backswing is driven mainly from his arms. If he were to utilize his full torso and a bit more of his hips, he could create a lot more depth in his backswing.
The main thing Lebron is missing out on with this position is the ability to use the ground to his advantage when he begins his downswing. When I say use the ground, think of pushing off the floor for a jump shot or a dunk. If he were to try and use his legs to generate speed, he doesn’t have a lot of room to do so. He didn’t use a lot of his legs going back, so he doesn’t have the ability to use them going forward. Once he learns to properly use his lower body, he is going to hit the golf ball miles.

*Insert no notes gif*
This is honestly perfect. He gets the club in an ideal spot on the down swing, and has a great hip turn. I have nothing to say here. Every beginner would kill to get to this position

Again, this is really good. The upper body is exiting left and you can see he isn't throwing his hands at the ball. I talked about this when breaking down Tommy Fleetwood’s swing and how it compares to someone like Scotty. Lebron is looking a lot like Scotty here! He is way beyond the curve when it comes to the positions in his downswing and through impact.

Follow through isn’t a huge deal for ball flight, but it can reveal what happened earlier. Here, LeBron’s front foot spins out, which usually means the upper body is taking over instead of the lower half driving the motion. That ties back to the limited backswing depth we talked about earlier.
For someone who’s barely a year into the game, LeBron is already miles ahead of most new golfers. The athletic base is there, the sequencing is solid, and with a bit more depth in the backswing, he could be launching 300-yard drives without breaking a sweat.
Don’t be surprised if “The King” becomes a legit golfer sooner than you think.
