Has Golf Gotten Too Casual?

On this week's episode of Vanity Index, Chad Mumm and Wells Adams discussed whether or not golf has gotten too casual.

Golf is in a much different spot than it was 20-30 years ago. It’s cool, it’s fun, it’s inclusive. Especially since COVID, tee sheets have been full with folks who have recently taken up the game and want to get out there and have a good time with their buddies.

From that point of view, it’s pretty awesome.

But we’ve also seen the downside of that. I can’t even begin to count the number of videos I’ve seen of drunk dudes throwing hands on the course over the last year. It seems like a new clip goes viral every week. And that’s the not-so-cool thing about.

On this week’s episode of Skratch’s Vanity Index podcast, co-hosts Chad Mumm and Wells Adams debated whether or not the game has become too casual and relaxed, and I think Chad made a great point.

“I think the game contains it all,” he said. “There’s different niches within golf. There’s different identities within golf. I think that’s what makes it beautiful. I think that’s what makes it compelling.”

Also on this week’s episode, Chad and Wells discuss major venues and why THE PLAYERS should (or shouldn't be?) the fifth men's major. Then Hollywood actor, comedian, and icon Richard Kind joins to share how he got into the game as a young actor, catching a Sean Connery cheating in front of him, the time he won a charity pro-am with a sandbagging partner, George Clooney's athletic ability, and an all-time Lee Trevino story.

You can listen to Vanity Index wherever you get your podcasts or on the Skratch YouTube channel.
