First Look: Titleist's New GT280 Mini Driver Debuts at The Sentry

After much anticipation, here's every detail we know so far.

With 2025 on the horizon, that means new gear is making its way into the bags of the best players in the world on the PGA TOUR. Although we don't have any official news or information on what's coming from the major equipment companies The Sentry in Hawaii will give us some insight into who's changing into what and for Titleist staffers their newest option comes in the form of the GT280 mini driver.

Here’s what we know

  • The GT280 is the updated version of the original TRS 2-wood that was first spotted at the 2024 Players.
  • Based on the name we have a VERY strong assumption the GT280 is 280cc, which would make it the smallest of the currently available mini drivers on the market.
  • From the USGA conforming list, we can confirm it's only offered with 13-degrees of loft
  • It has interchangeable front and back weights to dial in launch conditions, in the same way the Callaway and TaylorMade mini's do. But, the rear weight is farther back in the head and the other options.
  • The GT280 uses a fairway wood adapter instead of a driver adapter.

GT280 Speculation

Without proper information, we can only speculate on certain aspects of the new club but, from a fitting, design, and branding perspective we can draw some pretty powerful conclusions based on what we know so far.

With the GT branding, we’ll assume the GT280 shares the same materials and construction as the GT drivers; a titanium body with Titleist Thermoform carbon crown. This would make it Titleist's very first titanium driver alternative/fairway wood (if we want to put it into this category).

From the released images, the full face grooves make the GT280 feel a lot more like a big deep oversized 2-wood rather than a mini driver, which is how they originally branded the TRS prototype on tour. But, with the mini driver becoming a popular club category on its own Titleist is using the term mini driver in its released media.

Bringing this all together, the GT280 looks to sit firmly in the mini driver category, but differentiates itself by being smaller than the other current options in the market. This likely gives it an edge when being used off the fairway without a tee, while still being plenty forgiving off the tee too.

We'll continue to follow this story and see who puts it in play this week at the Plantation course.
