On the scale of great sport weekends, this one was way up there.
We had Rory playing for his national open in Ireland, F1 was at Monza for the Italian GP, where Max Verstappen clinched another win, the men's U.S. Open Tennis final, week one of the NFL season, and finally the Walker Cup at Cypress Point. All in all, that's pretty darn good.
Now, as much as I'd love to talk about them all, I think it's better if I stick to what I really know, so here is a breakdown of gear news from Ireland. BUT, one more thing before we get to that. Let's take a moment to enjoy a great moment from the crowd as Rory drained an eagle putt on the 72nd hole to get into a playoff with Joakim Lagergren.
I know what you're likely thinking right now. "Great, Ryan is just gonna write about how many times the TaylorMade Spider putter has been used to win all over the world this year.". Well, in many ways, you're right because with the win in Ireland, Rory has 4 wins on his own, and there are many more where that came from.
The real stat of the week came as Rory drained his eagle putt on the final hole because at that point he had already drained over 160' worth of putts for the round, which goes to show he was really feeling it on the greens.
For fun, here's one more look.
Hopefully the putter stays hot for the Ryder Cup in a few weeks.
With TaylorMade's the new MG5 wedges now available at retail and for custom order, Rory must have felt it was time to walk into a shop and pick up a new set to put into play for the Irish Open. In case you're not 100% sure, I'm kidding.
The fine folks at TaylorMade's tour department got Rory dialed into the new wedges heading into the week and shoutout to the folks at SMS On Tour for snagging the spec deatils from this weeks event.
This story continues to stew in my brain every time I see Joakim Lagergren on a leaderboard.
Although Rory did win the Irish Open, there was a very cool gear story brewing in the playoff either way, because with his second-place finish, Joakim Lagergren once again nearly snagged a win for Wilson and their 2025 DynaPwr Carbon Driver. He also plays the 3-wood, the 5-wood, Staff blade irons, and a lob wedge.
Here’s the deal, Wilson has been out on the professional tours for multiple decades, but it’s been a long time since one of their drivers has won a big time event, although Joakim did come second earlier this year at the KLM Open too. Even though Wilson has done a great job with their gear for a while, especially with their irons and wedges, this finish once demonstrates what they've done in the last few years on the driver front makes them a serious full bag contender.
Rory wasn't the only Ryder Cupper with a new club or two in the bag, because Shane Lowry also put a new Srixon ZXi LS+ driver in play at The K Club.
The driver was spotted earlier in the year in the USGA/R&A conforming list, and it look like after testing a number of models shane finally swapped this new one in. He made comments after round one about it working well and capped on the week with a T15 finish.
