Bench Tested: Callaway Chrome Tour Golf Balls

On this episode of Bench Tested, we're taking a look at Callaway’s Chrome Tour Series of golf balls and the numbers to look for when trying to find the right ball for your game.

*In Partnership with Callaway*

With equipment manufacturers creating greater segmentation in product lines and more products to go with it, trying to figure out what should work best for you can feel like a complicated process. This is where seeking out an experienced fitter with a proper launch monitor can be a big help.

But, we also understand that a lot of golfers are simply looking for a place to start when it comes to trying to understand how certain models of products are designed to work for them, and how they compare to each other, which is why at Skratch, we’ve created Bench Tested. It's a series dedicated to walking you through various models of clubs, balls, and any other gear to help you better understand how they stack up and educate you on what to look for when shopping for new gear.

For our third Bench Tested episode, we're taking a look at a selection of Callaway’s Chrome Tour Series of golf balls: The Chrome Tour, Tour X, and Tour Triple Diamond to show you how they compare and the numbers to look for when trying to find the right ball for you.

Standout Testing Notes: Callaway Chrome Tour Series Golf Balls

Chrome Tour

With the softest feel in the line-up, the Chrome Tour golf ball offers incredible greenside spin and feel through the bag, but, don't confuse soft feel for lack of distance. With its Hyper Fast Core and Seamless Aero design, the ball provides low long game spin to help golfers generate a flatter trajectory.

Beyond the technology inside, the Chrome Tour balls come in a variety of colors and visual aids, including triple track, triple track 360, Truvis, both in standard white and yellow.

Chrome Tour X

The Chrome Tour X sits in a unique space because even though it has a firmer feel compared to the standard Chrome Tour, it actually delivers more spin by design. The works (on the most basic level) because the firmer mantle layer compresses the soft cover into the grooves to help generate more friction.

My testing found the Chrome Tour X delivered roughly 10 percent more spin with an iron than the standard Tour.

And, last but not least, like the Chrome Tour, the Chrome Tour X balls come in a variety of colors and visual aids, including triple track, triple track 360, Truvis, both in standard white and yellow.

Chrome Tour Triple Diamond

For many golfers, including myself, the Triple Diamond fits in a great window by offering a slightly higher ball flight (to help aid in approach stopping power) while also producing lower spin. This is great for golfers who need the extra height for carry distance, but also don't want to add distance-robbing spin. As for feel, I found the Triple Diamond to fit right in between the standard Chrome Tour and the Tour X, and when it comes to short game, it was almost neck-and-neck with the other balls.
