Why Pink Has Taken Over Both the World Cup and the U.S. Open

The same forces driving football's hottest footwear trend are showing up at golf's biggest major.

Throughout round one at Shinnecock, I found myself noticing the same thing while watching U.S. Open coverage.

Pink was everywhere.

From shoes and hats to polos and limited-edition major collections, multiple brands seemed to arrive at the same color at the exact same time. At first, I assumed it was just one of those U.S. Open coincidences. Then I started watching FIFA World Cup matches and noticed the same thing happening on an even larger stage.

Across Nike, Adidas, Puma, and New Balance, pink boots have become one of the defining footwear stories of the tournament. Different shades, different silhouettes, same general direction.

The interesting part is that neither golf nor football appears to be driving the trend.

Fashion forecasting groups like WGSN and seasonal color reports from Pantone identified various shades of pink, from soft blush tones to brighter fuchsia hues, as key colors heading into Spring/Summer 2026. Considering most footwear and apparel collections are designed well over a year before they hit shelves, the pink showing up at the U.S. Open and the World Cup is likely the result of brands responding to the same trend signals rather than reacting to one another.

For golf, that's a reminder of how connected the sport has become to the broader worlds of fashion and sport. Brands like Nike, Adidas, Puma, and New Balance now have meaningful investments across both golf and football. The World Cup provides global visibility. The U.S. Open delivers a premium lifestyle audience. When the same color story appears across both stages, it creates a natural bridge between those worlds.

Maybe pink isn't really the story.

Maybe the story is that golf is no longer operating in its own bubble. The same trends influencing runways, sneakers, and football boots are increasingly finding their way onto the first tee.
