Skratch Attests: The Polo That Made Me Believe Again

A weightless wonder with desert-tested durability, Sugarloaf’s Pique Pocket Polo redefines hot-weather performance with stripes and soul.

I’ve never really been a polo guy. And I live in a place where you kind of have to be. Out here in the sticks of Eastern Oregon—where the high desert sun cooks everything in sight by 10 a.m.—you learn real quick what works and what doesn’t. Most polos? Don’t. But Sugarloaf’s Pique Pocket Polo? That one did.

It became my go-to last summer. Which is saying something, because I’m picky. I’ve always struggled with the traditional polo fit—too short, too fussy, too much tucking and re-tucking between swings. Maybe it’s the former football and basketball player in me, used to the elongated hem of a jersey that stayed put. But with polos, especially the boxier ones I prefer, I always felt like I was in a never-ending war with my waistband.

Enter the Pique Pocket Polo.

First, let’s talk fabric. A 94% polyester, 6% elastane blend that feels practically weightless. In desert heat, that’s everything. Heavy clothes add intensity to already brutal conditions, but this polo just floats. Breathable, soft, and cut so it only makes contact where it needs to—it’s the rare top that doesn’t cling when you sweat, but also doesn’t billow like a flag in the wind. It dries fast, wears easy, and—true to its mission—plays hard.

Fit-wise, Sugarloaf nailed it. It’s truly “true to size,” striking the perfect balance between structure and flow. Not slim, not baggy, and the length is dialed. You can wear it tucked, untucked, or pop the collar when that high noon sun starts cooking the back of your neck. And yes, the collar actually holds—structured enough to look sharp without feeling stiff or scratchy.

Then there are the details, the kind that keep you loyal to a brand. The inside hem tape reads PLAY OR PERISH—a cheeky, almost rebellious nod to those who take their golf (and gear) seriously, but not too seriously. The floating chest pocket has a small tonal Sugarloaf “S” hit stitched just above it, and another logo weaved subtly down the placket. Every stitch, every stripe feels intentional.

Speaking of stripes—that’s the visual signature here. Thin, classic, and designed to never go out of style. From Cosmic Berry to Club Red, these colorways are more than just punchy names. They carry stories and references that feel personal, like inside jokes among friends. You’re wearing a vibe as much as a garment.

Honestly, the only thing missing is a long sleeve version. I wear mine with sleeves year-round for skin protection, and I’d jump at the chance to stockpile a few full-length options. Maybe I’ll make the call this summer—see if I’ve earned that kind of pull.

But for now, I’m happy to report: this is the polo that made me believe again. A piece that feels less like sportswear and more like a well-considered companion—built for heat, movement, and individuality. Sugarloaf didn’t just get it right. They got it right with style.
