Two Pro Golfers Worth a Follow on X for Their Threads Alone

PGA TOUR vet Michael Kim has become a must-follow player, and other pros like the LET's Meghan MacLaren are following suit.

Without even knowing who he is, you’re probably familiar with his game—well, his social game. Michael Kim, a nine-year PGA Tour pro, who most notably won the John Deere Classic in 2018, has made a name for himself on X as its resident TOUR insider.

While his former Cal teammate Max Homa has become a golf-meets-comedic-relief must-follow online, Kim has taken up ownership in another avenue. From insight on how players travel tournament to tournament, to his own thoughts on hot topics like slow play and how creators benefit the TOUR, Kim has created a space for golf fans, media, and other players to chime in and get in on what happens beyond what the broadcasts show us.

He's honest and sincere, and despite it drawing in millions of impressions, it never feels as though Kim is trying too hard. He's dispatching his own experiences and is often times his own biggest critic—never shying away from giving analysis on his performances and how amateurs can digest his info and apply it to their own game.

Ahead of Genesis last week, Kim told Sports Illustrated, “I feel like I’ve used it in a good way. My sponsors really like it. I used to be mistaken for other players so it’s cool to see a few people here and there recognize me.”

Kim has built a steady following through his straight-shooting social dispatches—but it's not just fans who are taking notice.

Other players, across different tours, are seeing how impactful the one-of-a-kind candid commentary is with fan engagement. Ladies European Tour (LET) player Meghan MacLaren has entered the chat.

MacLaren is an English golfer who has been on the pro circuit since 2016, earning three wins and 14 top-10 finishes over the course of her time on tour. But the last two seasons have been rough for MacLaren. She lost her LET status last year, but she was able to earn it back for 2025 in Q School in December, and she's documenting her season on X and on her personal blog.

MacLaren is entering the golf X thread landscape and fulfilling the much needed role of the female perspective. The LET is to women's golf as what the DP World Tour is to men's golf. Often overshadowed by their “older sibling” tours, but in some instances pulling in big names for certain events. Occasionally the LET will see players like Charley Hull, Lydia Ko, and Danielle Kang—but its players like MacLaren who travel across the globe (literally every continent besides North America and Antarctica) competing who make up the DNA of the LET. She’s the perfect candidate to enlighten us on the woes that come with such a gig. Strong voices from each tour will serve the greater golf community very well—and I hope more players follow suit.

The more players are able to let us in on what life is like, the easier pro golf is to follow. Not just from the perspective of what needs changing, but providing a more comprehensive product for everyone to enjoy—fans, players, and golf leadership alike.

The golf content we consume is just a fraction of what it’s actually like.

Only a select few players fly privately, oftentimes, players are sitting in the main cabin just like us. In reality it’s more cost effective for players to post up with families in the areas they’re traveling to. Host families, for example, are a big resource on the LPGA Tour—and it’s not discussed enough.

But we wouldn’t know these bits of information if players weren’t forthcoming about it. Lifestyle content, off the course, helps ground our understanding of these elite athletes—it humanizes them, and places their talent into context for deeper familiarity and understanding.

The behind the scenes nature that these threads provide is supplementary to what we watch on TV. We all come for the golf, but we stay for the characters involved. Golf, just like all sports, thrives with storylines and protagonists we want to root for—I mean, who doesn't love an underdog story?

Both Kim and MacLaren have that true grit vibe to them. It's been a while since they've been in the winner's circle, but they're capable of it, they just need a few good breaks to pay off. Through their content, we get glimpses of their off-course personalities, while gaining a deeper understanding of the on-course personas they've developed.
