THE PLAYERS Doesn’t Need a Promotion, Even If It Deserves One

There's a ton of value in THE PLAYERS remaining what it already is: the best non-major in the world.

March is going to be major.

It wasn’t just a guarantee of things to come in the early days of the year’s third month, but the beginning of a campaign to elevate the PGA TOUR’s flagship event into golf’s fifth major championship.

So far, nothing substantial has come from the TOUR’s push—at least not yet. Brian Rolapp still has a highly anticipated press conference scheduled for Wednesday. But at the very least, the idea has sparked an ongoing conversation that’s reached every corner of the game.

The overall consensus has been this: there’s no doubt THE PLAYERS is annually one of the toughest tests in golf, powered by the strongest field of the year. So why not make it No. 5?

My two cents may be cheap, but THE PLAYERS is exactly what it should be: the best non-major in the world.

There’s always going to be the need for an event to wear that distinction as a badge of honor—why mess with something that’s worked so well for the last 50 years? It’s climbed to the pinnacle of the sport without the headstart that the major tag offers through decades of trial and error—now the folks in Ponte Vedra can hang their hats on perfection.

A challenging test that demands every part of your game to work in unison. Check.

A field comprised of the TOUR’s brightest stars and ascending youngsters. Check.

A title that makes any résumé without it feel lackluster. Check.

A past champions list that reads like a roll call of both past and modern greatness. Check.

Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Fred Couples, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler—all etched below the Gold Man’s feet. And they’d be the first to tell you their careers wouldn’t look the same with that box left unchecked.

It’s no secret major championships are measuring sticks—achievements that separate good golfers from those who belong in the annals of history.

Just ask McIlroy.

His place in history was in limbo during his decade-long dryspell. No one knew how his career would be remembered if he retired with four—all won at an early age. Then he conquered Sawgrass in 2019. A victory that earned him some breathing room from even his heaviest critics.

Or Rickie Fowler, whose argument for a potential place in the Hall of Fame will no doubt hinge on his 2015 win in Ponte Vedra—because, like the four majors, THE PLAYERS is an achievement that separates good golfers from those who belong in the annals of history.

As the years roll on, the whispers of a March major will only grow louder—especially if Rolapp has a surprise up his sleeve come Wednesday afternoon. But the future of this tournament won’t hinge on a label.

Its cache and weight among the players already puts it in that same conversation—it doesn’t need to be called a major to matter like one.
