It’s really starting to get ridiculous. I mean, why are we even playing these tournaments anymore? By Saturday afternoon, it couldn’t have been more clear who was going to win. Sunday felt like a waste of time, and we could have just skipped right to the handshake with Jack Nicklaus.
For years, the golf world has been pretty emphatic that there was never going to be someone as dominant and so clearly above the rest as Tiger Woods. He was a once-in-an-existence-type player.
But, man, if there’s ever going to be one, we’re watching him in real time.
Now, don’t get me wrong, Scottie Scheffler has a long, LONG way to go before we start putting his name in the same conversation as Tiger, but even the biggest Cat fanboys out there have to agree that this is some Tiger-type stuff the Texan is doing.
He’s hanging around for the first few days. Nothing flashy, but doing just enough to keep his name on the first couple pages of the leaderboard. Then, on Saturday, he makes his move. He bursts through the wall like the Kool-Aid Man, and everyone else in the field goes, “Oh, no!”—I can’t decide whether I love or hate myself for that line, but it plays!
Then over the final 18 holes, he slams the door shut. There’s no catching that man when he’s got one hand on the trophy.
Again, Tiger-type stuff. Or, you could even say, Jack-type stuff.
During Scheffler’s press conference following his win, Jack Nicklaus compared how he used to play down the stretch to how Scottie gets it done.
“I always felt like, hey, you know, I got 144 guys or whatever it might be out there to play. I've got to play well to beat 'em,” the Golden Bear said. “Once I got myself into position, you know, to win, then you got to be smart about how you finish it. And that's the way he's playing. He reminds me so much of the way I like to play. I don't think I played nearly as well as he played. He's playing better than I played and more consistent. He's just been playing fantastic, and I love watching him play. Whether it's here or on the television or whatever it is, I love to watch. Anytime he's playing, I want to watch.”
Like Andy Samberg’s Nicolas Cage said, “That’s high praise”—if that flew over your head, get cultured.
There’s an argument to be had that the PGA TOUR has never been stronger. I know that it's missing a couple names that currently play on LIV, but for the most part, all the best players in the world are competing on the same circuit.
And Scottie still feels like Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting.
“Do you know how easy this is for me? Do you have any fucking idea how easy this is? This is a fucking joke!”

To be honest, it was pretty considerate of him to have a little kitchen accident and let a couple other guys get a win for a change.
I was too young to remember Tiger’s early years of dominance. The early 2000s. I was only four or five years old, but I can imagine this is exactly what it felt like. Going into a tournament with Scheffler in the field, it feels over before it starts.
Someone else will hoist the hardware north of the border this week—Scheffler didn’t make the trek—but I’d be shocked if he doesn’t add a fourth major to his collection in 13 days.
He’s like Thanos.
Inevitable.
